Title: What is Art? Minecraft and Dioramas
Content Standards Addressed by this lesson:
Explain, demonstrate, and interpret a range of purposes of art and design, recognizing that the making and study of art and design can be approached from a variety of viewpoints, intelligences, and perspectives
- Critical thinking in the arts transfers to multiple uses in life
- Discuss and explain how the visual arts are an integral part of the working world (DOK 1-3)
- What is the difference between high or low art?
- What big ideas in art are important in career opportunities?
Inquiry Questions:
- How do you decide to make a work of art?
- What qualifies as a work of art?
- Do the things you build in Minecraft qualify as art?
Understandings:
- There are nearly innumerable ways to create a work of ‘art’
- Works of art usually follow the element and principles of design and are anchored in a concept
- This is evident to student discovery as they navigate how to take a physical work of art and transfer it to the Minecraft world, creating a connection between art and their interest in Minecraft.
Essential Questions:
- What qualities or elements qualify or disqualify something from being a work of art?
Evidence Outcomes:
- Today students will be able to explain how the “building mindset” applies to various areas of life by recreating the physical object Lulu’s café in the Minecraft world and writing about how the “building mindset” transfers between different mediums.
Assessment and Evidence of Outcome:
- Students participate in a gallery walk and mini critique at the end of the lesson.
- How does the thinking required to make a diorama relate to the thinking required to make a Minecraft build? Name one way this thinking could be applied to another activity in the real world.
